Wine has such an incredible history, and even today is thoroughly enjoyed in countries all over the world!  Here are a few fascinating and fun wine facts that you may or may not have been aware of.

* There are approximately 10,000 different varieties of wine grapes around the world.  That’s a lot of different wines to try!

* The three top countries for wine production are Italy,France, and Spain.  The United States ranks as fourth.  Forty percent of the wine made each year is from either Italy or France.  Thirty percent of the wine consumed in the world is heavily located in these two countries.

* The country of Turkey has almost twice as much acreage set aside for vineyards than the United States.

* The three states in the US in which wine consumption is at its highest is California, New York, and Florida.

* Not all wines should be aged.  In fact, approximately 90% of wines made should be enjoyed within a year of being bottled. During the aging process, white wines gain pigmentation and color while red wines lose their color.

* Over $50 million dollars in sales in 2008 are from celebrity wines.  Jeff Gordon, Bob Dylan, and even Drew Barrymore have been getting involved in winemaking and have their own product lines.

* A typical 5 ounce glass of wine has 100 calories, while a typical 12 ounce can of beer packs a whopping 150 calories.  Wine is fat-free and cholesterol-free!  Each glass of wine needed approximately one half pound of grapes to make.

* Did you know that it takes approximately five years to harvest a crop of commercial wine from new grape vines?

* Someone who is fearful or hates wine is said to suffer from oenophobia.
